We Believe

What Do United Methodists Believe?

John Wesley, the first Methodist wrote, “A Methodist is one who loves the Lord his God with all of his heart, with all his soul, with all of his mind, and with all of his strength.”

We Believe:

  • in the words of the Bible that state that human beings are created in the image of God. While this does not mean that we are equal to god, it does mean that we have been blessed with the ability of God to believe, use our minds for reason, and to think for ourselves.

  • that we are blessed by the fact that God loves each and every one of us and has mercy on all of us no matter who we are or where we are in our lives.

  • that God has made Himself known to us as being One through three ways: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

  • that salvation comes through the grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ and therefore is a free gift from God that blesses us - not because we are worthy, but because we all are one of God’s children.

  • that the first and best way of understanding who we are and who God wants us to be is through regularly reading the Bible. Furthermore, we believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God.

  • that God has blessed us with the ability to understand His great love for us as found in the Bible and our everyday, ordinary lives.

  • that Jesus calls us to have a life just like His own life - a life full of love, a life that gave mercy to others, and a life that was full of sacrificial giving.

  • that faith and good works go together hand-in-hand and that through being saved, God opens up to us ways to serve Him and the needs of the world. While non of us can ever “earn” our way to Heaven, once we become a Christian, we want to share with others through our words and through our actions the great love of Jesus.

  • that God has loved us long before we ever knew who He was, and that He has been working in our lives without our knowledge to bring us to salvation.

  • that Jesus call us to love everyone in all situations and in all circumstances of life with His gift of new beginnings and new life through Him.

How Do I Become A United Methodist?

First - give all of your heart and understanding to Jesus.

Second - if you have been baptized, the United Methodist Church affirms your baptism by every Christian Church in the world. If you have not been baptized, you will be offered several ways of being baptized: the placement of water on you head, using a pool so that your whole body can be put under the water, on in a creek or lake outdoors.

Third - proclaim before other Christians that you believe that Jesus died for you, that He has forgiven your sins, and that you now have been freed to lead a new life of faith, love, and mercy through the power of God.
